Frequently Asked Questions about SIKA Products

SIKA building products are appropriate for residential or commercial use. Many of SIKA’s expansion joint covers are ADA-compliant, fire-rated and able to handle thermal forces and multidirectional seismic movement.

You’ll find SIKA expansion joint covers in sports venues and stadiums around the world, as well as large healthcare venues, commercial and retail establishments.

SIKA recently acquired precompressed sealant and expansion joint manufacturer EMSEAL Joint Systems, Ltd. and now offers many of its premium products under the SIKA EMSEAL brand.

I’ve never bought Sika expansion joint covers before. How do I choose the right one?

When choosing expansion joint covers, consider several factors:

  • First, decide which material you need. Metal joint covers are usually best suited for floor joints in areas with high-traffic, including parking garages. Sika offers expansion joint covers in both milled aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Read the product description carefully so you get the right joint cover for the job. They’re usually marked for either interior or exterior applications, or both. Exterior joint covers often have features to avoid water intrusion and resist wear and tear from outdoor exposure, but interior joint covers may not.
  • Consider the size of the joint, and review the product specifications for your Sika joint covers to make sure you get the right size for the gap you need to cover.
  • If you’re concerned about temperature fluctuations, water intrusion and/or seismic activity affecting your joints, review the product description and specifications carefully to select an expansion joint cover rated for thermal movement and/or seismic forces.
  • Make sure the joint cover you choose suits your application: floor-to-floor vs. floor-to-wall, etc.
  • If you’re selecting floor-to-floor joints, consider the type of flooring you have. Some Sika expansion joint covers are made for concrete floors, while others work well for interior joints in carpet or tile.
  • Consider load capacity. If you need to cover expansion joints in an area with heavy machinery, forklifts, etc., you may need heavy duty expansion joint covers rated to handle heavy loads.

Why do I need expansion joint covers?

Expansion joint covers help you protect the joint from a variety of stresses. Exterior floor joints are especially at risk of structural damage, since they’re subject to weather changes during winter freeze-thaw cycles and heavy loads. Uncovered joints are subject to water intrusion and corrosion. Even interior joints can become a trip-and-fall hazard if you don’t cover the gaps with the appropriate joint covers.
