About Schluter-Systems

Schluter-Systems was founded in 1966 by Werner Schlüter, a master tile setter who saw firsthand the limitations of conventional tile installation methods and set out to engineer better solutions. In 1975, he introduced the original SCHIENE profile, a precision tile edge trim that immediately gained a following among professional installers across Europe for its clean, protective finish. What began as a side project shared informally among fellow tile setters grew quickly into a full-time business, and by 1989 Schluter had established a dedicated North American operation in Plattsburgh, NY.

Over the following decades, the company expanded far beyond edge profiles. Schluter developed DITRA and KERDI, two product systems that fundamentally changed how tile is installed by providing uncoupling, waterproofing, and vapor management in a single integrated approach. Today Schluter-Systems operates with over 2,200 employees across Europe and North America, offers more than 40 product lines, and is recognized worldwide as a market leader in tile installation systems.

Schluter products are used in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, commercial flooring, shower assemblies, stairs, and anywhere tile needs extra protection and long-term structural support. Their systems are designed to work together, from substrate preparation through edge finishing, so installers can minimize callbacks and deliver installations that hold up over time.

Popular Schluter Products at Koffler Sales

Koffler Sales carries a wide selection of Schluter tile installation systems covering membranes, profiles, shower components, transitions, and more. These are some of the most commonly specified:

  • Schluter SCHIENE Tile Edging – The original Schluter profile, and still one of the most widely used tile edge trims available. SCHIENE protects exposed tile edges at floors, walls, and countertops with a minimum-reveal design that keeps the tile surface as the visual focus rather than the trim itself. Available in stainless steel, solid brass, aluminum, and anodized aluminum in 98.5" lengths, making it adaptable to virtually any finish aesthetic from utilitarian to high-end residential.

  • Schluter RENO-U Tile Floor Edging Profile – Protects exposed tile edges while creating a smooth transition from a tiled surface down to an adjacent floor at a lower elevation. Designed for retrofit applications where tile meets carpet, hardwood, LVT, or another floor covering with a height difference. One of the most practical transition profiles in the Schluter lineup for renovation projects where flooring types change between rooms or at doorways.

  • Schluter KERDI Flange Kits – Shower drains with an integrated bonding flange that bonds directly to the KERDI waterproofing membrane, creating a continuous waterproof connection at one of the most failure-prone points in any tiled shower. Available in ABS, PVC, or stainless steel with 2" or 3" drain outlets.

  • Schluter DILEX-AHK Cove-Shaped Profile – An anodized aluminum and textured color-coated aluminum cove-shaped profile designed for sterile, easy-to-clean tile transitions at floor-to-wall junctions. The cove shape eliminates the right-angle corner where dirt, moisture, and bacteria accumulate in standard installations, making it a preferred detail in healthcare facilities, commercial kitchens, food service environments, and any setting where hygiene and cleanability are priorities. Profiles, corners, and end caps are all available for complete installation.

  • Schluter RENO-T Tile Edging Profile – A T-shaped transition profile for retrofit applications where two hard surface floor coverings of equal height meet. Available in 7 material and color combinations across 2 widths, making it flexible enough to match a wide range of existing flooring finishes.

  • Schluter KERDI Shower Tray – A prefabricated expanded polystyrene shower base with a factory-sloped surface and integrated KERDI waterproofing, eliminating the labor-intensive process of building a traditional mortar bed slope on site. The tray accepts direct tile installation and integrates with the full Schluter shower system. Available for center drain and wall drain configurations in two sizes, it dramatically reduces installation time and eliminates the inconsistency that comes with hand-formed mortar bases.

  • Schluter DESIGNBASE-SL Tile Wall Base – A finished tile baseboard profile that replaces traditional painted wood or vinyl baseboard with a clean, modern alternative that matches tiled floors and walls. Available in 3 finishes at heights of 2-3/8" or 3-1/8" in 98.5" lengths.

  • Schluter DITRA-DRAIN Drainage Membrane – Combines uncoupling and drainage benefits specifically for exterior tile applications such as terraces, balconies, roof decks, and other outdoor surfaces where moisture trapped beneath the tile assembly causes freeze-thaw damage, efflorescence, and bond failure. Includes a drainage membrane and self-adhesive seaming tape, allowing water that penetrates the tile surface to drain away from the substrate rather than saturate it.

  • Schluter RENO Ramp and RENO Ramp K Profiles – Sloped transition profiles that bridge the height difference from a tiled surface down to an adjacent floor at a lower elevation, with a gradual ramp rather than an abrupt step edge.

Frequently Asked Questions About Schluter Products

What is Schluter known for?

Schluter is known for its complete tile installation systems, particularly the DITRA uncoupling membrane and the KERDI waterproofing system. The brand originated with the SCHIENE tile edge profile in 1975 and has grown into a global leader offering more than 40 product lines that address every stage of a tile installation, from substrate preparation and waterproofing through edge finishing and movement joint accommodation.

What is the difference between DITRA and KERDI?

DITRA is primarily a floor membrane that uncouples tile from the substrate to prevent cracking while also providing waterproofing and vapor management. KERDI is a wall and floor waterproofing membrane used in wet areas like showers, tub surrounds, and bathrooms. Both are core components of the Schluter system and are often used together, with KERDI on the walls and DITRA on the floor, to create a fully waterproofed tiled assembly.

Are Schluter products code-compliant?

Yes! Schluter KERDI and DITRA have been evaluated by ICC-ES (ESR-2467) and are listed by cUPC, UPC, and CSA. The KERDI system also complies with California Specification 01350 VOC requirements, which is referenced by major green building standards. Specific code requirements vary by jurisdiction, so it is worth confirming with your local building authority.

Do Schluter products work for commercial tile installations?

Schluter products are widely specified in commercial settings including hotels, healthcare facilities, restaurants, retail spaces, and institutional buildings. Their stair nosing profiles, movement joint systems, cove profiles, and waterproofing membranes are all designed to perform in high-traffic and demanding environments. The DILEX-AHK cove profile in particular is commonly specified in healthcare and food service settings for its sanitary floor-to-wall transition.

How do I choose the right Schluter edge profile?

The right profile depends on where the tile ends, what material it meets, and the height relationship between the two surfaces. SCHIENE is the standard for floor and wall edges with minimum reveal. RENO-U handles transitions from tile down to a lower adjacent floor. RENO-T is the choice for same-height transitions between two hard surface floors. RENO Ramp provides a sloped transition for accessible thresholds and cart traffic. If you are unsure which fits your application, contact our team and we can help narrow it down.

What makes the Schluter shower system different from a traditional mortar bed shower?

The Schluter shower system, built around KERDI waterproofing membranes, the KERDI Shower Tray, and KERDI Flange drains, eliminates the need for a traditional mortar bed entirely. The prefabricated tray arrives pre-sloped and ready to tile, the membrane bonds directly to standard drywall or backer board, and the drain flange integrates with the membrane to create a continuous waterproof assembly. Installation is faster, the waterproofing is more reliable, and the system carries code approval that traditional mortar bed builds often require additional documentation to prove.
